day 1

during wimbledon we turn the reporting over to our photographer Richard Hess

The tournament starts in glorious mild sunny weather and Phil and I are pleased to have Centre Court seats for Djokovic, Osaka and Edmund matches.
First for me is 7ft Riley Opelka vs 28-yr old Steve from Germany. Riley breaks Stebe the first game and holds to take the first set 6-3.
Stebe breaks the opening game but Riley gets it back later for 2-2. They reach a tiebreaker and Opelka wins the second.

Time to trot to Centre for Djokovic vs Kohlschreiber and it’s lovely to be here in bright sunshine. The court is perfectly manicured and a delight to behold. They trade breaks the first two games but Novak soon takes charge and coasts to a first set of 6-3.
As in the first Novak goes down a break but corrects to 2-2. Later he breaks again for 7-5.
The third has only one break and Novak has the match 6-3 in the third.
Meanwhile, Auger-Aliassime has beaten Pospisil in four sets on Court 4.

Next up on Centre we have Putintsevva and Osaka squaring off. Good hard hitting is great to watch. It reaches a tiebreaker, won by Putintseva. Wow. Quite unexpected.
At 2-2 Naomi makes too many errors and Yulia is up a break.
Yulia continues to keep the pressure up and prevails 6-2.
This is the first major upset of the tournament.

The final match on Centre is Edmund vs Munar. Edmund gets up a break and I take a breather to get food and note that both Zverev and Tsitsipas get beaten. Amazing day of upsets. When I return Edmund is up a break in the second having taken the first. He holds and has a 6-4, 6-4 lead. Meanwhile, Gauff has Venus down 4-6, 2-4. Venus loses in two and Munar goes down 0-4. He recovers one break and saves two match points before losing 6-4.
An excellent first day at Wimbledon.
Cheers
