day 2

Day 2 promises more bright sunshine as Rafa and Roger play their first round matches. I’m nowhere near close enough to get a Centre seat but I do get Court 1 for Rafa.
First match on Court 3 is Kyrgios vs Thompson and I rush with others to get good seats. Nick looks very uninspired and Thompson gets up 3-1 as Nick plays dreadfully but enjoyable to watch anyhow. At 2-5 Nick saves two set points and at 4-5 he serves a 135 mph second serve ace to reach 5-5. At 5-5 Nick retrieves a drop shot and falls to the turf. Jordan runs to get Nick’s retrieve but misses it while Nick is flat on his stomach. Nick gets up, takes a bow and sports a big grin. What good fun we have here. They reach 6-6. At 5-3 in the tiebreaker he hustles forward for a drop shot and pushes a tweeners pass attempt wide. What was he thinking?? His next two serves are aces for the set
7-6.
Early in the second Kyrgios falls near the net and stays down an extra 10 seconds. He’s feeling his oats. Down 3-4 break point, he chases a lob over his head and purposely waits to try a tweener, which he misses. What is he thinking? He loses the set 6-3.

I now head for my Court 1 seat for Barty vs Zheng. Zheng goes down 0-3, recovers to 3-3 but loses the first 6-4.
Barty rolls in the second 6-2 and that’s that. Hope she continues to play well.
Meanwhile, I follow the score and note Kyrgios wins the third in a 12-10 tiebreaker. He then drops the fourth 0-6 but takes the match 6-1 in the fifth. What was going on?

Next up on Court 1 is Konta vs Bogdan. Many good rallies here and Konta squeaks by the first
7-5. Kate Middleton watches the first but skips the second.
Bogdan goes down 2-5 in the second and Jo breaks again for the match. Well played, Jo.

The match of the day on Court 1 between Rafa and Sugita is up next. In the meantime I note Harris takes the first from Roger before Roger rolls 6-1, 6-3, 6-3.

Rafa has early trouble going down 0-2, 0-40 but takes the next three games and later wins the first 6-3. Sugita immediately drops his serve in the second. Great shot-making from both as Sugita trails 0-2. Rafa coasts to 6-1 with hard-hitting.
More of the same in the third as Rafa wins it 6-3.

I’m next off to court 18 where Fognini saves two break points before holding for a 6-3 third set against Tiafoe. Fognini breaks for 1-0 and protects serve until 4-3. Then Tiafoe breaks twice for 6-4.

In the fifth, Tiafoe loses serve immediately. He gets a break point chance at 2-1 but Fognini holds. He continues to hold and closes out the match 6-4.
Another great day.
Cheers
