our man Richard

At last the big event has arrived. The outlook for the next 10 days is glorious. Sunshine projected throughout with temperatures in the low 80s.
Opening day matches on Centre are Roger vs Lajovic, Lepchenko vs Wozniacki and Wawrinka vs Dimitrov. This wonderful lineup and good weather have attracted a huge queue. I arrived about 4:30 Saturday afternoon and there were 295 ahead of me. By 10 pm the queue reached 500. I hope the tennis today justifies two nights of camping.
Since Federer begins at 1:00 I visit court 10 for a bit of Stakhovsky vs Sousa. Stakhovsky bested Roger a while back but his real interest to me is that he’s a serve and volleyer. He takes the first and is up a break when I depart for Centre.
Great to be back on Centre in the seventh row. Roger comes out bashing the and Lajovic finds himself down 1-6, 1-4. Roger’s play is breathtaking. He continues to win 6-2,6-3,6-4. He looked VERY good to me.
Wozzie comes up next but I head to court 12 where Coric is at 4-5 vs Medvedev in the first. Coric is concentrating like a fiend but DM goes 7-6(6), 6-2, 3-1 when I leave. He loses later.
I arrive just as Wawrinka and Dimitrov are knocking up and shade is descending on our seats. Grigor goes up 5-0 and takes the first 6-1. The second goes on serve until Stan breaks for 4-2. Grigor breaks back for 4-4, saves two set points at 5-6 but loses the tiebreaker 6-3. We now have a dogfight. Grigor takes charge and Stan is down 1-4. Grigor is broken at 5-3 and they reach 6-6. Several mini breaks are traded before Stan takes it 7-6. The audience is strongly on his side, partly owing to many being Fed fans.
The fourth goes on serve until Grigor gets broken to lose 6-4. Very high level of play in the late going.
We call it a day.
